Background.

Shiv Rao, MD, is the co-founder and CEO of Abridge, a healthcare conversation company that uses cutting-edge natural language processing (NLP) and generative AI to generate medical notes in real-time. Dr. Rao is addressing clinician burnout by drastically reducing the time doctors spend charting and giving them more time to practice medicine.

Through his own family’s experience with a rare disease and treating patients as a cardiologist, Dr. Rao saw opportunities to improve the gap between healthcare conversations and what happens next. With Abridge, doctors and patients can get more value from their medical conversations. Abridge enables providers to save time on documentation, while also empowering patients to stay on top of their health. Dr. Rao and the team have created a culture at Abridge that is built on values—focusing on people instead of a billing system, and on the overall customer experience instead of box-checking mandates.

In addition to Abridge, he is a practicing cardiologist and previously led the provider-facing investment portfolio for UPMC. He completed his medical education and training at the University of Michigan and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and studied at Carnegie Mellon where he programmed virtual synthesizers, sold records in Japan, and skateboarded in IMAX movies.
